Good news for all Alopecians

If you are about to start your 2016 taxes and you wear a wig here is some good news. According to the IRS, “You can include in medical expenses the cost of a wig purchased upon the advice of a physician for the mental health of a patient who has lost all of his or her hair from disease.”

What this means is that the cost of your wig is a deductible medial expense. Here are some relevant links to share with your tax preparer:

  1. You should check with your tax professional, but in addition to wigs (sometimes called cranial prosthesis devices), you can usually write off medications related to your alopecia, including over-the-counter ones like Rogaine/Minoxidil. If it was recommended or prescribed by your physician. Hope this helps!
